Biography/Autobiography

I am a fan of non-fictional literature. In particular, I enjoy biographies and autobiographies. For my English class, I would like my students to read a biography or autobiography and then write their own autobiography comparing the two stories. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations of biographies for a high school English class? Maybe a favorite biography you have previously read? Thanks for your help!

  1. I would have students choose a biography of someone around their own age that is currently in the media.

  2. This is a little different, but I would love to have students read Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Killer and then read an actual biography of Lincoln. The fiction book actually teaches a lot of historical fact. Don't watch the movie though...

  3. That's a great idea Chandler! Getting some background knowledge from a fictional book and applying it to a biography. Interesting!

  4. My favorite autobiography is called Still Standing by C Vivan Stringer. Vivan Stringer is the women's basketball coach at Rutgers. The stories she shares throughout her coaching career and her personal, secretive battle with cancer are intense, inspiring and well written. She also mentions the very public encounter with Don Imus' remarks towards her women's team. This type of read gets readers laughing and crying, boy or girl. Male athletes can read this and leave with a better view on women's athletics. Females can read this and be inspired by a strong mother and professional. Also, the issue with Imus can spark a debate/discussion in the classroom. I recommend the book to anyone!!

    1. I love when biographies like the one you mentioned are very personal, but also are tied in with athletics. I feel there are so many life lessons you can learn through sports. Your description of this biography reminds me of my favorite biography, Quiet Strength by Tony Dungy. Dungy is the former head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Bucaneers. The biography talks about his personal adversity as well as the adversity he faced in the field.

  5. The Diary of Anne Frank is such a classic and allows students to see struggles and obstacles Anne dealt with during the Holocaust. I think this would give students a different perspective about life and freedom.
